8 Tips to keep you one step ahead of your work

As a full-time Corporate Trainer, part-time dressage rider and exercise enthusiast, wife, mother and soon to be grandmother, managing time can be difficult. We all have the same amount of time in a day. We often hear “there just isn’t enough time in the day”, perhaps we should be saying “I’m not managing time well, what can I do?”. It is interesting that this article above as well as other time management tools I have reviewed, often talk about planning time, taking time to create a schedule, a To Do List, sit back and consider what tasks I have, where do I need to get to, is there a route to travel that won’t waste time. Facsinating that time isn’t about moving faster, it is about slowing down and reflecting on the day ahead, and what you need to be successful. This issue was addressed in ADED 1P31; time management as a student can support success or lack of time management can be a students undoing.
I like the bloggers explanation of tasks
• The Most Important Task – This is the truly important and urgent task that must be done today. It could be something that directly impacts your job or personal relationships.
The Lingering Task – This is the pesky task that just won’t get off your todo list. It has been there for days or weeks. (Or months!)
The Hidden Task – This is the todo that keeps appearing, but you have yet to recognize or add to your todo list. It needs to be captured and done
• The Overdue Task – What have you not completed that you will be penalized for? An overdue bill or late fee? Missed the early bird pricing? This task is costing you time and money.
As a person who wears many hats, it is important to look at all aspects of my life and apply this to work, home, the barn, friends and family.
Another resources that supports specific tips for time management is Becoming A Master Student (Ellis,Toft, Dawson, 2012). This was the text for ADED1P31 and provided a wholesome chapter on Time Management. The authors list 25 tips to manage time. Having access to a variety of resources that direct ones thinking and knowledge base in the same direction, is reaffirming from a learners perspective. As a learner I feel more confident when I have more then one tool, that is sharing similar ideas.
Certainly written text provide knowledge and new understanding and are valueable. However what the on-line resource provides are comments to the original post, that share real life, real-time ideas or tested ideas that have worked. In a way, the comments reconfirm the post. Umm, yet another learning moment for me. This exercise has provided a new perspective for me of the value of on-line information sharing. Could it be that Feedly will be a component of my PLE?
